Don't Miss A Trick - Be Scam Aware!

June is now upon us and with the summer comes Scam Awareness Month, 2018.

This annual event is geared to boosting awareness, educating businesses and consumers alike about the everyday risks they are exposed to, with the aim of empowering them to better protect themselves.

Citizen’s Advice has revealed that 72% of the people they surveyed had been targeted by scammers over the course of 2015-2017.  Staggeringly, over a third of these people had been targeted five times or more.

One of the key objectives of Scam Awareness Month is to remove the stigma attached to becoming a victim of a scam, or “falling for” these predatory practices.  This is hoped to lead to more reporting of attempted scams when they do happen, greater knowledge and awareness of the fraudulent activities as they happen, and a higher likelihood of bringing scammers to justice.

There are lots of checks you can do in order to carry out due diligence if you think that you might have been targeted by a scammer – many of which can be found at the Citizen’s Advice website.

If you think you have been scammed there are plenty of actions you can take in order to get your money back, prosecute the perpetrators and prevent this from happening again – all of which starts with reporting the crime.

You can report fraudulent activity to Action Fraud, Trading Standards and PhonePay Plus (if you believe you have been tricked into dialling a premium rate telephone number.)

The theme of this year’s Scam Awareness Month is ‘Don’t Miss A Trick, Be Scam Aware’.  For more information about this event and how you can get involved with this important consumer protection initiative, visit the website here.
