Does your business have a Quality Management System?

Quality Management Systems

  • A Quality Management System (QMS) is a collection of business processes focused on consistent delivery of requirements that meet customer needs and enhance their satisfaction
  • It is designed to make sure every installation meets every requirement of the relevant standard
  • A QMS can be on paper or electronic
  • To help you in your application, we have included QMS templates in our Download and Resources area

Does your business have a registered trading address?

Registered Trading Address

As part of the MCS certification requirements, your business must have a physical trading address registered with and verified by MCS

Do you have a Consumer Code membership?

Consumer Code Membership

  • It is mandatory for all MCS certified installers to be registered and comply with a Trading Standards Institute (TSI) Consumer Code
  • The aim of a consumer code is to improve customer service standards and will help you when dealing with domestic customers

Do you have a nominated technical person?

Nominated Business Technical Person

  • To ensure your business meets the necessary MCS technical standards, you must nominate a competent individual whose role is set out in MCS standard 025
  • You can nominate yourself if you meet the technical competencies of this standard

Do you have continual improvement procedures (CIP) in place?

Continual Improvement

  • Having a CIP demonstrates to your customers that you actively look to improve your products, services, processes, and performance throughout your business
  • MCS standards require your business to have a CIP in place for you and your employees
  • These procedures should make sure any instances of non-conformity of the MCS standards, are corrected and prevented from being repeated

Do you have access to external documents?

Access to External Documents

  • Having access to relevant external documents, such as building regulations, is required as part of the MCS standards
  • When using these documents and software for calculations, you must ensure you are working with the latest versions available

Do you use contracts for every installation?

Use of Contracts

  • MCS standards require that a contract must be in place, for every installation, between you and the customer
  • Any work you subcontract out also needs to be managed through a formal subcontract agreement

Do you keep historic records?

Appropriate Record Storage System

As part of your MCS application you must be able to demonstrate:

  • The keeping of historic records of individual installations for at least six years
  • The recording of all complaints received and how they were resolved
  • How each employee involved in design, installation, set to work and/or commissioning demonstrates their competency against the competency criteria

Do you have a health & safety policy?

Health & Safety Policy

  • The law states that every business must have a policy for managing health and safety, and that it complies with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. (**Applicable if you have more than 5 employees)
  • It is also important to ensure your business is able to complete a risk assessment where appropriate

Are you TrustMark registered?

TrustMark Registration

  • To take part in government schemes such as the Green Homes Grant, your business must be TrustMark Registered
  • The primary aim of TrustMark is to drive up standards across all sectors of home improvements and ensure high levels of consumer protection are maintained
  • Once registered, you will be added to a directory of certified installers, where homeowners can contact you to get a quote
  • Only TrustMark Registered Businesses can carry out work for such initiatives, to provide quality assurance to householders that the work will be completed to the accepted standards
