Are your home security measures up to scratch?

When looking to buy a new property, you may be impressed by an intelligent alarm system or movement sensitive lighting. But after these initial considerations have worn off and the routine of daily life sets in, how much ongoing attention do you pay to the home security measures you have in place? Would you be confident enough to say they’re up to scratch?

Keep secure and safe

According to the Office for National Statistics, recorded crime rates in the UK have risen by a scary 10% in the last year. Opportunist thieves will be on the hunt for weaknesses – so it’s your job as a homeowner to make sure they don’t find any.

This can be a bit harder if you’re jetting off on holiday for a couple of weeks, but a couple of extra precautions should keep them at bay. Many streets these days have lampposts every few feet, but you should check whether these turn off between certain time periods in the night. If they do, install a movement sensitive light to the outside of your property – this will be very off-putting for anyone who tries to get too close!

Noise is another way to protect your home from burglars. Having a gravel drive will be immediately off-putting, but it won’t necessarily be enough on it’s own. Installing a burglar alarm which is visible from the outside of your property is likely to get the message across that you take home security seriously.

If you have little to no security systems in place at the moment, then you may wish to get a range of quotes from local security engineer. You will be able to find reputable, independently inspected engineers on the TrustMark website. There are so many different types of system available now, so it’s worth at least speaking to an expert to see what would be the best outcome for your needs. If you have particular cause for concern in your area, you can check the local crime stats for your street online, and make a judgement from this as to how much money you think is worth spending on home security.

On top of threats from an external source, it’s also worth ensuring your home is safe from the inside out. Check your fire alarms are in good working order and install a carbon monoxide detector. If you are a landlord, you will be aware of the obligations you owe your tenants which go further than the standards set for a personal property. If you’re not sure how to keep your family or tenants safe, then speaking to an expert organisations within the Fire and rescue services, such as CFOA BlueWatch could hold the answers.
